Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation opened in December 2010 a public international design competition to design Gösta's extension in Mänttä. The competition turned out to be tha largest in Finnish history in terms of the amount of the participants. Altogether 579 entries for the new museum from 42 countries were submitted.
The winner was chosen architectural office MX_SI architectural studio's design for a pavilion-like, multi-faceted wood building.
