Glulam beam frame rises

By mid-May the erection of the glulam beam frame was begun. The building will contain about one hundred glulam beam girdles and each girdle will contain five separate glulam beam elements. Due to the multi-faceted shape of the building each girdle and each glulam beam element is of different size. The glulam beam elements will be delivered by Late-Rakenteet Oy that has specialized in challenging and unusual glulam constructions. Image: Juha Roponen

Casting the concrete foundation

In late March early April 2013 the foundation work was in progress. Since the museum is built on a gentle slope on several different levels, also the casting of the foundation is carried out in several stages. The dry and sunny late winter weather helped the builders in their foundation work. Photographer: Kaisa Ylinen

So far

The garage down

As next the old garage that stood on the site of the new building, was demolished at Joenniemi. Once the electricity was cut off and every detachable object was taken to a pallet, an excavator started to hammer the concrete garage. Image: Olli Huttunen

Crane up

In early March a robust crane was erected. It can move easily even massive amounts of goods within the site. With the help of the crane's long jib also the elements of the future extension can be put to their places. Image: Olli Huttunen

Excavation of the foundation in progress

In January 2013 the excavation of the foundation is in full progress. The surrounding park will be protected so that during this phase the foudation of the building on a gentle slope will be excavated on several different levels. There will be plenty of traffic on the yard as lorries take filling to the work site and the excavated soil away. Image: Kaisa Ylinen

District heating

In December a district heating pipe was excavated across Joenniemi yard. Previously with oil heated Museum Gösta will soon be heated in a more ecological way. Image: Kaisa Ylinen

The task was begun by felling some trees in the park

Construction of Gösta's extension in Joenniemi was initiated in November by felling trees. The old and esteemed park has been taken in account in locating the building. In spite of this, some 50 trees needed to be fallen on the site of building. The work was done by a forestry professional Tuomo Jokinen.
