G.A. Serlachius built an Empire in the tiny town of Mänttä, around the “Green Gold” we call Forestry Industry in Finland. He established a ground wood mill in 1868 and the paper factories are still operating today. His personal love and affection for art made him a patron for several young artists of the Golden Age of Finnish art, like Akseli Gallen-Kallela, now Finland’s most beloved and famous artists. Over the years the collection grew to hold now the most famous names in Finnish art as well as some jewels from international artists like a piece by Claude Monet. The in Finnish scale rare collection of old European master paintings contains works by Dutch, Italian, Spanish and French painters from the 15th to 19th centuries.
This extensive collection with changing exhibitions of contemporary art, the masters of Golden Age of Finnish art are displayed in the Art Museum Gösta, Gösta Serlachius’ former manor home. Art Museum Gösta's new section, pavilion, is an interesting example of modern wood architecture and has won several prizes for its architecture.
