WITH YOU | WHAT REMAINS?

Sampsa Virkajärvi's exhibition comprises two video works that explore on themes like growing old, the changing relationship between parents and children and saying farewell.

An old man lies on a bed
, no longer able even to speak – it’s time to say farewell. In the work With you, a son tries to understand both his father and himself as the middle-aged father of small children. The work explores the changing relationship between father and son – intimacy, admiration, difference, speechlessness. Over many years, the possibility of understanding and some kind of continuity is built between them.

The video work What remains? depicts the final years of a mother suffering from dementia in her own home, and the way that time and place change as illness advances. How many homes she lives simultaneously. The work also tries to describe the difficulties that an old person and her carer encounter when she does not remember, see and comprehend.

In his works, Virkajärvi depicts with an intimate and essayistic approach via personal experiences the challenging nature of life situations and the form they take in the mind – what it is like now and how we can try to understand, tolerate and accept it. The curator of the exhibition is Laura Kuurne.
