Markku Valtonen is a self-taught artist whose works surprise a visitor across the Museum Gustaf.

Valtonen is a Helsinki-born rock musician who has over the years been more and more occupied by visual art. Since 1990s he has  sculpted wood which is his principal material.

Valtonen's works contain blooming humour that does not leave the audience cold.

The exhibition at Museum Gustaf consists also works made of other material. The majority of the works, however, is sculpted wood that has also been painted. The exhibition entails also texts by poet Tomi Kontio who has written them based on the works exhibited.

Markku Valtonen works have been showcased at Museum Gustaf since it was opened. The wood sculptures depicting the workers of the mill telling their stories have been part of the first main exhibition. After the exhibition was dismantled, the sculptures were relocated within the museum.
