Madonna of the Cherries

The exhibition offers new interpretations of the painting Madonna with Cherries, painted in the studio of Quinten Massys in the 16th century.

Marja Tanhua’s photographic and video works construct a dialogue between the present day and a work painted centuries ago, asking how and when the picture became holy.

The models of Tanhua’s works are contemporary children and young people, who have been set in the pictures. The Madonna with Cherries painting is part of the Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation’s collection. The painting is exhibited for the first time in Mänttä following extensive conservation work.
